Mulebone

Mulebone

Mulebone is virtuosic multi-instrumentalist John Ragusa and New York Blues Hall of Fame inductee Hugh Pool. The launching pad for their musical expression is traditional blues played with guts, technique and a without-a-net sense of adventure. The word is transcendent.

W.C.Handy winning author Don Wilcox wrote, "Mulebone takes old blues and folk music into space as well as anyone since Led Zeppelin covered Sonny Boy Williamson.”

Hugh Pool plays the National Steel, electric, cigar box and acoustic guitars, harmonica, stomps on a boot-board, and sings lead vocals all with a mouth full of whiskey and a giant heart. John Ragusa plays all manner of flutes, fifes and tin whistles, the cornet, conch shell, jews harp, and well…anything he can put his lips on. He also sings harmony vocals, perfectly complimenting Pool's. The result is a sum greater than the parts; more sound, texture and groove than 2 people should be legally allowed to make.

Samoa Wilson Trio

Samoa Wilson Trio

Since she was 12 years old, Samoa Wilson has been captivating audiences with a voice the New York Times calls “sweet, effortless, old-timey”. Raised in the riverbed of traditional North American folk music, she came up in the Boston scene, under the wing of jug band and folk legend Jim Kweskin. Her current duo, the Four O’Clock Flowers, a stark and electrifying exploration of gospel, blues and jazz, with slide guitar maestro Ernie Vega, has become a staple of the thriving New York City folk community. Her choice of repertoire makes the difference: torchy and honeyed renditions of haunting little-known tunes, from a woman’s perspective. From the source of the traditional and classic material, she poses a modern complaint, salutes the transformation of women’s work and suffering into women’s triumph.

Jake Walker Trio

Jake Walker is a native New York Blues singer and guitarist. A regular on the European touring circuit, Jake Walker is known for his sweet, melodic, and dynamic guitar phrasing, as well as his soulful vocals and strong original material. Jake began his professional career in the Blues backing JSP recording artist James Peterson, and his son, Lucky Peterson, in clubs and restaurants on the west coast of Florida. Returning to New York, Jake established his own voice in the competitive NYC Blues scene, fronting bands such as the neo-burlesque NYC Blues Devils (weekly house band at The Cutting Room), and running several popular local Blues Jams. A simple live recording of one of these jams, posted on Myspace, caused no small buzz in 2006, earning Jake "Artist of The Week" at Big City R&B Magazine, regular airplay on blues FM and internet radio, and three overseas tours, all before Jake had recorded his first proper album! In 2008, multi-platinum producer and engineer Elliot Mazer (Neil Young, "Harvest", The Band, "The Last Waltz) showed up at one of Jake Walker's shows at Ashford and Simpson's Sugar Room club, and signed Jake to his new label, LeftTurn. The result was the "Confidence Man" LP, which Mazer also produced. The CD earned universal critical praise, and helped take Jake's presence in the international Blues circuit to a new level, earning him the sobriquet "The Ambassador of New York Blues", after many subsequent tours in England, France, Belgium, Holland, Switzerland, Italy, and Serbia
